Mafia developer Hangar has been working on the next game in the series for over 13 years. Official updates and information about the new Mafia game have been scarce since its existence was confirmed in 2022. The game was initially rumored to be a prequel, with plans to reportedly develop it in Unreal Engine 5. Now, nearly two years after the unnamed Mafia game was first confirmed, publisher 2K is reportedly close to officially announcing the series.

A reliable gaming industry leaker claims that a Take-Two subsidiary will deliver an update to the Mafia series. In a post on X on Tuesday, video game researcher @Kurakasis said 2K is preparing for a Mafia announcement. “I can tell you that a few days ago, Take-Two started preparing an announcement regarding the Mafia series,” they said.

The source said it’s hard to say when 2K will make the announcement, but we could see something in about three to four weeks, which is in line with previously leaked reveal timelines. It’s hard for me to put a time frame on it, but with Judas I saw they were working on the new trailer about 3-4 weeks before it came out, so… very quickly,” Kurakasis said.

The same leaker previously revealed the reveal of Judas, a first-person shooter from Take-Two-owned studio Ghost Story Games. The game was announced via a trailer at The Game Awards 2022.

However, Kurakasis warned that the release of the Mafia series is not necessarily related to Mafia 4. It could also be a next-gen update for Mafia: Trilogy, which includes a Mafia: Definitive Edition remaster, a Mafia 2 remake, and a port of Mafia 2. Mafia 3, or something else entirely.

However, considering Hangar 13 is already confirmed for 2022, it’s more likely that the next Mafia game will be a new entry in the series rather than a next-gen update. It’s unclear whether the upcoming game will continue the story of 2016’s Mafia 3 or serve as a prequel to previous Mafia games.

Mafia maker Hangar 13 will also launch TopSpin 2K25, a revival of the popular tennis video game series, later this month. The tennis simulation game will launch on April 26 on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series S/X, Xbox One, and PC.

Back in August 2022, Hangar 13 confirmed that a new Mafia game was in development. The studio’s general manager Roman Hladik said at the time that the new project was still “a few years away” from its official unveiling.
