Indore, Madhya Pradesh:
Two accused in the March 30 last year massacre at the Beleshwar Mahadev Jhulelal temple in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were arrested today, a police official said.
The temple’s floor was built after covering a huge stepwell that caved in during Ram Navami celebrations last year, killing 36 people, including 21 women and two children.
The temple trust’s chairman Sevaram Galani and secretary Murli Kumar Sabnani were charged on Friday under Section 304 (negligence) of the Indian Penal Code, the official said. Killing does not constitute murder) was detained.
When asked about the lack of any action taken by the police against the civic officials, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Rishikesh Meena said that the investigation is on and the points of judicial inquiry will also be covered.
“We have written to the authorities concerned requesting them to provide some information. Once we get the information, we will take impartial action based on the evidence,” the DCP said.
Incidentally, on January 19, the Madhya Pradesh High Court expressed displeasure over the incomplete investigation and directed the police to complete it before the first anniversary of the tragedy.
