10-year-old Punjabi girl dies after eating cake ordered online on her birthday

In a video shared widely on social media, the victim can be seen celebrating with her family.

Last week, a 10-year-old girl in Punjab province died of suspected food poisoning after eating a cake on her birthday. Her grandfather said the girl’s entire family, including her sister, fell ill after eating the cake. He said the cake was ordered online from a bakery in Patiala.

Just hours before his death, the victim Manvi could be seen cutting a cake and celebrating with her family in a widely shared video on social media.

She cut the cake at around 7 pm on March 24 and the entire family fell ill at 10 pm that day, her grandfather Harban Lal said, adding that the sisters started vomiting soon after. He said Manvi asked for water, expressed extreme thirst and complained of dry mouth. He added that she then went to bed.

The next morning, her family took her to the hospital after her health deteriorated. Harban Lal said she was given oxygen and had an electrocardiogram – a recording of the heart’s electrical activity. But they failed to save her. She was pronounced dead a short time later, he said.

The family claimed that the chocolate cake ordered from ‘Cake Kanha’ contained some poisonous substance.

A first information report or FIR has been filed against the bakery owner. “The post-mortem of the body has been completed. Cake samples have also been sent for testing. We are awaiting the report,” they said.
