Kiev, Ukraine:
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Sunday that plans for last year’s long-awaited counteroffensive in Kiev had been leaked to Russia in advance.
In 2023, Ukraine launched a counterattack with the support of billions of dollars in Western weapons, but it basically failed and failed to break through Russia’s multiple defense lines and fortifications.
“Our counteroffensive plan was on the Kremlin’s table before it even started,” Zelensky told a news conference in Kiev on Sunday.
His office later confirmed to AFP that Zelensky was referring to Moscow’s access to sensitive military planning information.
Zelensky did not provide any other details about the leak.
He went on to say that Kiev is preparing “several” versions of its 2024 battlefield strategy to avoid a repeat of past mistakes.
Asked whether Ukraine had plans to launch another counteroffensive this year, he said: “We have a plan, a clear plan. Because of the leak, we will have several plans ready.”
Russian forces are now pushing back into eastern Ukraine, seizing the symbolic frontline town of Avdievka and seeking to expand their ammunition and manpower advantages.
