Chennai, October 4 (IANS) on a new step to curb stimulating online material, Tamil Nadu Police on Saturday arrested Utubar Mari Das, popularly popular from his residence in Neelkarai, Chennai, who claims 41 lives on an actor-polezian for allegedly posting an inflammatory comments against the state against the state against the state on the Karur stampede tragedy.
According to police sources, the cybercrime team has been on a high warning since the stampede of 27 September, scanning social media to prevent misinformation and proliferation of materials that can harass public order.
Mari Das, who originally lives from Madurai and is known for sharp comments on politics, allegedly questioned the government’s crowd control and security preparations in a rally in a video late Friday night.
In early Saturday, a special cyber crime team raided Utubar’s house in Gomthipuram, Madurai, but was not found there.
While working on intelligence, the authorities detected him in Neelkarai in Chennai and took him into custody.
Their phones, laptops and other electronic devices were seized to examine the nature of shared material.
A senior police officer said, “We are working against rumors and false narratives about the incident of Karur that can create unrest. The freedom of expression is respected, but deliberately efforts to instill fear and mistrust among the public will face strict legal action.”
The case against Mari Das has been registered under provisions related to promoting enmity and disrupting public peace.
The police is also investigating whether their content was part of coordinated efforts to influence public opinion after the Karur tragedy.
It marks the second high-profile social media crackdown in recent times.
On 30 September, the Cybercrime Wing of the Greater Chennai Police arrested the YouTuber Felix Garald, who runs the Redpix channel, allegedly spreading wrong information and fulfilling objectives for the carur stampede.
Officials said that cases have also been registered against at least 25 other social media account holders for posting rejected claims and videos, blaming the state and police.
Karur Stamped, a Tamilga Vatri Kazgam (TVK), addressed by Vijay, has triggered intensive political debate on security protocols and mob management in large political rallies.
The state government has ordered a special investigation team (SIT) inquiry to decide the responsibility.
The police have urged the citizens to avoid sharing unacceptable information, warning that action will invite the action to disrupt peace.
Mari Das’s online activities are under investigation.
