Subedar Thanseia, a distinguished World War II veteran of the Indian Army, has died at the age of 102, officials said on Monday. He overcame numerous difficulties and took action in the crucial Battle of Kohima, which contributed to the crucial victory of the Allies.

The veteran from Mizoram died on March 31.

A senior official said: “His heroic experience during the Battle of Kohima, a key confrontation in World War II, and his critical deployment in Jessamy defined his extraordinary life. Played an important role in laying down the legacy of the 1st Assam Regiment.”

Throughout his service, Subedar Tanseiya showed commitment to the country, “going above and beyond the call of duty, earning him a revered place in Indian military history”.

“His actions in Kohima, which overcame tremendous odds and contributed to a crucial Allied victory, marked a turning point in the conflict in the east,” the official added.

The Indian Army said India condoled the death of Subedar Thanseia, “a distinguished World War II veteran of the Assam Regiment of the Indian Army”.

After retirement, Subedar Thanseia continued to inspire people with his dedication to his community and country, being actively involved in Veterans Affairs and educational activities.

Officials say his post-playing life was equally influential, fostering patriotism and resilience in younger generations.

They said the event to pay tribute to Subedar Thanseiya attracted overwhelming participation from the army and civil fraternity, including comrades from the Assam Regiment, who gathered to pay their respects.

“The story of Subedar Tanseiya is not only a testament to the past but also a continuing source of inspiration for the future, paying tribute to the legacy of all Indian soldiers who have served with distinction,” the official said.
