'Women need to be shown more respect': Australian PM's message to men, boys

Anthony Albanese said the government has made a commitment to fund the provision of safe spaces for women.

Canberra:

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has urged the country’s men and boys to take responsibility for ending the crisis of violence against women.

Albanese said on Tuesday that his government would do what it could to tackle violence against women but said men and boys must address the root causes of violence, Xinhua news agency reported.

He was speaking on Monday at a 29-year-old man out on bail for another charge of murdering a 28-year-old woman in New South Wales state.

According to activist group Counting Dead Women, 25 women have died violently in Australia so far in 2024, including five women who were stabbed in a Sydney shopping center in early April.

“We all have to take responsibility for what violence against women is. The fact that more than one woman every week is killed by someone they know, whether it’s a partner or someone. In a relationship, it’s completely unacceptable,” Albanese told state media Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) radio on Tuesday.

“Men and boys need to openly discuss these issues. Women need to be respected.”

Asked on Tuesday whether he would declare violence against women a national emergency, Albanese said the government had known it had been a crisis for some time and had pledged additional funding to provide safe spaces for women. .
