Thiruvananthapuram:

A 36-year-old woman and her newborn baby met a tragic end after they attempted delivery using acupuncture treatment at a rented house in Karakkamandapam here last evening, police said on Wednesday.

As the shocking incident came to light, her husband Nayaz, a sound system worker from Poonthura, was taken into custody by the Nemom police on Wednesday morning.

They registered a case of unnatural death in the incident.

According to the police, this was the fourth delivery of the murdered woman, Shemira Biwi, and she had never consulted a doctor in the last nine months of her pregnancy period.

The couple allegedly sought the help of an acupuncturist instead of a medical doctor and the practitioner used to come to their rented house, a police officer said.

The woman developed some complications on Tuesday and was finally taken to a private hospital in the evening, where doctors declared her and the baby dead.

As soon as news of the death of the woman and the newborn baby emerged, local councillors, ASHA workers and neighbors came out against Neyaz and accused him of not allowing his wife to consult a doctor and seek proper medical treatment.

Ward councilor Deepika said that the woman’s husband had not allowed the Asha workers to enter their house or talk to him.

He said, “The family was not ready to allow us to enter their house or share any other details. One day, we somehow managed to enter the house and talked to her. Then we came to know that it It was her fourth pregnancy.”

According to the details shared by the woman who was killed at the time, all the previous deliveries were through C-section and the last one was just a year ago.

“Therefore, there was no possibility of normal delivery in her case,” the councilor said. Even though we called her on phone, she was afraid to talk to us. Nayas said he wanted normal delivery and had done all the research in the state. Disrespected the medical system.” Said further.

Deepika further alleged that the husband even claimed that they were planning to take lessons from YouTube for normal delivery.

An elderly woman from the neighborhood also made serious allegations against her husband for refusing to treat Shemira.

“He was not allowed to talk to us. He would never go out of the house alone. When we advised him to give proper treatment to a pregnant woman, he said that it was his wife and would not tell others about her health. There’s no need to worry.” ” the woman said.

Police said that the interrogation of the husband is going on and other action will be taken after gathering information.
