“Will force captains to think more strategically”: Mitchell Starc on Impact Player rule

Kolkata Knight Riders and Australia fast bowler Mitchell Starc believes that the absence of the Indian Premier League’s impact player rule will force captains to think more strategically when the T20 World Cup starts in the US next month. The Impact Player rule, which was implemented last year, has seen teams bat with more aggression and fearlessness, which has led to consistent scores of over 200.

The IPL has been particularly high-scoring this year, with scores in excess of 250 on at least three occasions.

“The impact player rule changes things to a great extent. Having one batting and one bowling XI gives everyone the opportunity to bat at a lot of depth,” Starc told the media after KKR beat Mumbai Indians by 24 runs here on Friday. Get a chance.”

“I think a lot has been made of that rule and a lot of high scores have been made, which is the nature of the wickets and grounds where we play here. The impact player rule has played a fair part in that, when you’re eighth. Or the batsman and batting all-rounder will come at number nine, this is a long batting lineup.

“There’s no fear in the powerplay when you just have to clear the infield and score runs. Certainly, there has been some very good batting, don’t get me wrong, it’s not just the rules that play a part in it.” Starc, who took four wickets for 33 runs in KKR’s win, said that the absence of such a rule in the T20 World Cup could affect the score.

“There has been some brilliant scoring, some brilliant partnerships and some brilliant individual performances with the bat. On the other hand, time will tell, we have got the World Cup next month, there are no rules affecting the players. Will it affect the scores, right now Remains to be seen,” he said.

“It probably will. There is talk about the balance of the team and when you are not able to bring someone in, your all-rounders come back into the game, certainly world-class all-rounders who balance the team now.

He said, “When you have only 11 players, the captains also have to think a little strategically. It has been interesting to experience this firsthand in the IPL.”

Starc, who was bought for a record price of Rs 24.75 crore, has faced aggression from the batsmen this season, but the Australian bowler said there was no “price-tag pressure” on him.

“I haven’t set my price tag, so it is what it is,” he said.

The 34-year-old said the IPL is serving as a perfect opportunity to prepare for the T20 World Cup, but at the same time he is not thinking too far ahead and is looking forward to helping KKR get closer to their goal of winning the tournament. Are focusing on.

“I haven’t really thought about it too much. This is T20 cricket, it is not as challenging as Test match cricket. Physically (it’s) no problem and (it’s) a great boost to play here in the best T20 league in the world,” he said.

“You are playing some high quality cricket before the World Cup, there are a lot of players in this tournament who will be involved in the World Cup. In that regard, it is a great thing to see and test your skills.

“In terms of length of time, it is an integral part of international cricket. My main focus is on the two-day game in Lucknow, the World Cup is next month. Right now, it’s about trying to help KKR win the tournament.”
