Wigan fire: Boy, 4, injured in ‘devastating’ blaze that kills one person

A four-year-old boy has died in hospital from his injuries following a house fire in Wigan.

A 45-year-old man died in a fire on Warrington Road at 2.30am on Sunday.

The boy was taken to hospital with serious injuries, but Greater Manchester Police confirmed today that he had died.

Officials do not believe the cause of the fire was suspicious, police added.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire.

Detective Inspector Lee Gridley said: “This is a devastating incident and all our thoughts are with the family of this young boy who has his whole life ahead of him.

“I hope people will join us in sending our best wishes to everyone involved in this incident as they begin the recovery process.”

The detective added that the “heartbreaking news” of the death was a “tragedy” for the Wigan community.

He also urged anyone with any information about the fire to contact police.
