'Tesla's obligations require...': Why Elon Musk delayed India visit

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said this morning that he was postponing a planned trip to India due to “Tesla’s obligations are very onerous,” a day before he was expected to begin the visit of. Musk, who owns Tesla and SpaceX, will meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his two-day visit and announce investment plans for his companies.

The world’s richest man confirmed on X that he had postponed his trip but said he was looking forward to visiting India later this year.

“Unfortunately, Tesla’s onerous obligations require a postponement of the visit to India, but I very much look forward to visiting later this year,” the tech entrepreneur said.

Musk said last week that he was “looking forward to meeting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi”, followed by reports that he may arrive in India on April 21.

In June last year, he met with the Indian Prime Minister in the United States and described himself as a “fan” of his and assured that Tesla would enter the Indian market “as soon as possible”.

His trip to India is expected to bring breakthroughs for Tesla and Starlink, the satellite internet operator he owns, to capitalize on growing domestic demand in the country.

Electric car maker Tesla is reportedly looking for new markets, and India is one of them.

According to AFP, the Starlink program will receive preliminary approval to operate in India. A few days ago, the Indian government notified changes in its foreign direct investment policy in the space sector to ease access for offshore investors in Indian companies.
