Russian President Vladimir Putin gave an interview to U.S. television host Tucker Carlson on Tuesday because of his departure from the one-sided reporting by many traditional Western news media, the Kremlin said.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Western media no longer even try to be impartial when reporting on Russia and expressed no interest in communicating directly with such media organizations anymore.

“When it comes to the collective West, the big online media, TV channels and (and) big newspapers must not boast that they are at least impartial in their reporting,” Peskov said.

“These are media outlets with extremely one-sided views. Of course, there is no willingness to communicate with such media. It is meaningless and unlikely to be of any use.”

When asked directly why Putin was interviewed by Carlson, Peskov said his stance was in stark contrast to that of much of the Western media.

“His position is different from others. It is by no means pro-Russian, not pro-Ukrainian, but pro-American, but at least it is in sharp contrast to the position of the traditional Anglo-Saxon media,” Peskov said.

Russia’s TASS news agency quoted the Wall Street Journal as saying the interview may be broadcast on Thursday.
