The White House claims Russia has acquired a “disturbing” emerging anti-satellite weapon but cannot directly cause “physical damage” to Earth. US President Joe Biden’s national security chief will now brief top lawmakers after warning of a “serious” national security threat. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the threat was not yet “active” but “we are taking this potential threat very, very seriously”. Experts say if Russia deploys nuclear warheads to destroy US satellites, the consequences could be. However, Russia has blasted Washington’s concerns as “malicious fabrications” and a ploy to try to pass a Ukraine aid package stalled by Congress.
