Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud on Saturday shared an incident in which he was trolled and abused online for “misrepresenting facts” during a court hearing.

CJI Chandrachud narrated a recent incident where a live video from his court was doctored to portray him in a negative light. He clarified that the video showed a lawyer suddenly leaving the hearing while he was still presenting his arguments. However, he clarified that reality is far from what the footage depicts.

“Just four or five days ago, when I was hearing a case, I had some pain in my back, so all I did was put my elbows on the armchair in the courtroom and move my position in the chair,” the chief said . Justice Chandrachud said.

The distorted video led to what he described as “vicious trolling and knives being drawn.”

“What they don’t tell you is that all he did was change his position on the chair. Judging for 24 years was probably a little taxing for me. I didn’t leave the court. I just changed my stance.” But I’ve been viciously abused, viciously attacked, knives have been drawn, but I do believe that our shoulders are broad enough and our ultimate confidence is in the work that ordinary citizens have in us,” he added.

The Chief Justice made the remarks at the 21st biennial conference of state-level judicial officers organized by the Karnataka Judicial Officers Association, titled “Fairness and Excellence in the Future of Justice”.

Chief Justice K. Chandrachud then highlighted the importance of judicial officers ensuring work-life balance and effective stress management.

“The ability to manage stress and achieve work-life balance and full justice are not separate, but are intertwined. We often tell doctors and surgeons, ‘Heal yourself.’ Before you can heal someone else, you must learn.​​ How to heal yourself. The same goes for judges,” he said.
