New movie coming soon

Taylor Swift’s concert film “The Eras Tour” opens on Disney this week. The streaming cut features five new songs, including “Cardigan.” “Taylor Swift: Time Tour” is making a splash at the theatrical box office, raking in more than $262 million worldwide through a groundbreaking deal with AMC Theaters, which distributes the film rather than a traditional Hollywood studio . AP music writer Maria Sherman wrote in a review that the film “is a virtual replica of her blockbuster concert performances, looking back at all 10 recordings from her 17 years of recording Room Album,” adding “This is an opportunity for every seat in the house to be transformed into the best seat in the house.”

Film editor Carla Gutiérrez (“RBG”) makes her directorial debut with “Frida,” an evocative portrait of artist Frida Kahlo told in her own words. Gutierrez uses Kahlo’s diaries, letters, essays, and her paintings to drive the narrative, delving into her childhood, her marriage, her style, her accidents, and, of course, her art. “Revealing her own words and voice, I think what we’re presented with is a new way of entering her world, her mind and her heart, and really understanding art in a more intimate, raw way,” Gutierrez told The Associated Press filming ahead of the film’s Sundance premiere. Now streaming on Prime Video.

Nicolas Cage stars as Paul Matthews, a very ordinary college professor, husband and father, when millions of strangers start seeing him in their dreams At that time, his life changed drastically. Jocelyn Noveck wrote in her AP review, “Norwegian writer-director Borggli makes his English-language debut here (co-produced by Ari Aster filmmaker), he aims to make a broader statement about the nature of fame. While the topic he broached before may not be original, it’s ripe for exploration in the right hands—especially someone like Cage Such an inventive and unpredictable cast. Fame can be intoxicating, but it can and probably will, in an instant, this movie says. Streaming on Max starting Friday. For the kids, “Trolls Together” comes to Peacock.

With every album she releases, Kacey Musgraves proves to her loyal listeners that her creative process has no boundaries. The fan discovered her on the LGBT country anthem “Follow Your Arrow” on 2013’s Same Trailer Different Park and followed her through new psychedelic disco-pop pastures on 2018’s Golden Hour, The album won the top award at the 2019 Grammy Awards. And then she pivots again: in 2021’s The Wreck, a meditation on divorce and autonomy with the uncanny ability to break hearts in less than 15 words: “If this were a movie, there would be love. Enough is enough,” she sang. “But this isn’t a movie.” Which brings us to the “deeper well.” Musgraves is once again paving her own path: her country has become folkloric, her songs beautiful and sophisticated, her lyrics finding deep meaning in the ordinary. It sounds soft and classic, with the hyper-specific language of the current moment. Maybe it dated the songs, maybe it grounded them firmly in Musgraves’ reality. Either way, they’re having an impact. (Read the Associated Press review.)

On Justin Timberlake’s final solo album, Man of the Woods, released in 2018, JT looked to Americana to find his next musical direction. It was widely seen as a serious misstep – a superficial attempt at innovation, mining familiar images of country life to reflect his new reality as a father. On Everything I Thought It Was, his first new album in six years, JT makes a 180-degree turn. He’s returning to the ’00s R&B pop that made him a superstar. That’s evident from the first singles released: the moody “Selfish” and “Drown,” a dreamy reverb enhanced by Timberlake’s distinctive falsetto. There are some surprises too: his boy band (asterisk) NSYNC is featured, as are Tobe Nwigwe and Afrobeat star Fireboy DML.

Most pro sports simulators offer incremental upgrades from season to season, but Sony’s MLB The Show 24 is going for something truly revolutionary: You’ll be able to play as a woman. In the Women Paving the Way storyline, you’ll be able to create a female baseball player from scratch and see if she can achieve her dream of playing in the Major League Baseball. Other new storylines include a tribute to New York Yankees Hall of Famer Derek Jeter and a second season of the Negro Leagues documentary available to stream. Of course, there will be the usual enhancements to gameplay and animations, with the developer promising a special emphasis on “outfielder urgency.” Toronto Blue Jays slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is the new cover model. If you order the Digital Deluxe Edition, you’ll be able to play the first pitch on Friday on PlayStation 5/4, Xbox X/S/One, or Nintendo Switch.
