The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a combination of dry spell, isolated cold-wave areas and an early movement of the northeast monsoon over the southern peninsula as India moves into the late November weather pattern.
There is a continuous drop in temperature and rapid change in weather in North India. As the fourth week of November approaches, sudden changes in weather are being seen in many areas including Delhi-NCR, Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana.
Cold wave alert has been issued in Delhi-NCR and many parts of North India. Dense fog has started appearing in many areas of Uttar Pradesh. Meanwhile, the air quality of Delhi-NCR remains in the extremely hazardous category. As of 6 am, the air quality index (AQI) was 374.
Rain in South and Peninsular India
IMD has issued advisory of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over areas of southern India for the next three to four days. Widespread rain, storm and at times heavy rainfall has been predicted over states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Mahe region (in the coastal strip).
A low pressure system is expected to form over the south-eastern Bay of Bengal, which will lead to increased rainfall activity over the region. Thiruvananthapuram is expected to be mostly cloudy with occasional rain or thundershowers, while Hyderabad is expected to be partly cloudy with mist.
Cold wave in North and Central India
Cold wave is prevailing in Central and Northern India, especially Western Madhya Pradesh and the minimum temperature has fallen well below average.
The IMD has also issued a cold wave warning and predicted morning fog/haze for the vast Delhi NCR region, which is headed towards extreme cold.
The weather in Delhi-NCR will remain almost unchanged from November 22 to November 25. There may be fog in the morning, but the sky will remain clear.
Cold is expected to increase during this period. The minimum temperature can drop to around 10-9 degrees Celsius, and the maximum temperature can drop to 24-26 degrees.
East and West Bengal (including Kolkata)
The forecast for West Bengal, especially the southern region around Kolkata, calls for mostly dry weather this week (21-27 November), with no notable rainfall expected.
As soon as December arrives in Kolkata, one starts feeling cold. It is quite cool in the morning, but it feels hot during the day.
Although Kolkata is expected to have sunny and warm skies during the day (with temperatures ranging between around 18 to 29 degrees Celsius), the city’s air quality remains a serious problem. As per the latest reading, the AQI is in the “very unhealthy/severe” category.
