Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade starts Thursday new york The city, with new balloons depicting Buzz Lightyear pac man ready to take off and float in the sky lubub And lego Adding beauty to the streets.
The parade is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. EST, rain or shine, on Manhattan’s Upper West Side and end at the Macy’s Herald Square flagship store at 34th Street.
Temperatures in the city are expected to hover around 40, but wind gusts between 25 mph (40 kph) and 30 mph (48 kph) will make it feel cooler, according to David Stark, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in New York.
Officials are closely monitoring the forecast, as city law prevents Macy’s from flying full-size balloons if sustained winds exceed 23 mph (37 kph) or gusts exceed 35 mph (56 kph). Weather had forced the balloons to land only once, in 1971, but wind caused them to sometimes blow lower than usual.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said officers will decide Thursday morning whether any balloon adjustments are needed.
He told a news conference on Wednesday there was no known, specific, credible threat to the event, but as always, thousands of police officers would be deployed along the route.
The parade has been a magnet for protests in the past two years, when pro-Palestinian protesters flocked to the parade route. “Police are prepared to deal with that and any other situations that come our way,” Tisch said.
A series of star-studded performances will be sprinkled throughout the show, along with a marching band, dancers and cheerleaders. The cast includes “Wicked” star Cynthia Erivo, Conan Grey, Lanny Wilson, Foreigner, Lil Jon, and Audrey Nuna, EJAE and Ri Ami of Hunter/X, the fictional girl group at the center of this year’s Netflix hit “Kpop Demon Hunters.” The Radio City Rockettes will also be there, as well as members of Broadway’s “Buena Vista Social Club,” “Just in Time” and “Ragtime.”
All told, the parade is expected to include dozens of balloons, floats, clown groups and marching bands – all of which will pave the way for Santa Claus. Among the new balloons on display is a large onion cart featuring eight characters from the world of “Shrek.” “Kpop Demon Hunters” will also be featured in the sky with Derpy Tiger and Susie characters.
The event will air on NBC, hosted by “Today’s” Savannah Guthrie and Al Roker and his former colleague Hoda Kotb. On Telemundo, the hosts will be Andrea Meza, Aleida Ortiz and Clovis Nino.
The parade is also being broadcast on NBC’s Peacock streaming service.
