What is Turkish Coffee?
Turkish coffee is a unique way of preparing coffee that originated in the Middle East and is popular in countries like Turkey, Greece, and Iran. Unlike most coffees, it is made from very finely ground coffee beans that are boiled without filtration, resulting in a thick, strong brew with a layer of foam on top.
Coffee beans are ground into an ultra-fine powder, similar in consistency to flour. This fine grinding is important to achieve the distinctive texture and flavor. Traditionally it is made in a small, long-handled vessel made of copper, called a “sezve”, with other metals also being used. The coffee grounds settle to the bottom of the cup and the remaining liquid is drank. Sugar is often added before cooking, and cardamom is a common added flavoring.
