Flight delays, cancellations and interruptions are the worst parts of flying. On-time performance is a major factor in travelers choosing airlines for connecting flights. The latest results from Cirium, a travel data analysis company, show that the most punctual airport in the world in February was Washington Dulles Airport in northern Virginia, with a departure punctuality rate of 89.95%.
Followed closely by Vienna International Airport (VIE), with an average departure rate of 89.39%. Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) rounds out the top five airports for on-time departures with a success rate of 89.04%. Joining them in first place are Benito Juárez International Airport (MEX) (88.36%) and Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport (ATH) (88.12%).
According to Cirium Aviation Analytics’ monthly report on global airline on-time performance, Aeromexico leads the airlines with an on-time performance of 90.66%, followed by Delta Air Lines and Iberia in the top three.

Passenger traffic data released by the Washington Metropolitan Airports Authority (MWAA) shows that overseas flights departing from Washington Dulles Airport increased significantly by 26.9% in 2023. The airport welcomed 8.4 million passengers, breaking the international passenger throughput record set in 2019. The surge in passenger traffic in 2023 is mainly due to the addition of flights to IAD by five airlines: ITA Airways, Norse Atlantic, WestJet, Air China and PLAY.
Indian airports that topped the ‘Monthly Punctuality Report’ released by data analytics firm Cirium include Kempergoda International Airport (KIA) in Bengaluru and Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad. In 2023, these airports ranked second and third respectively. Arrival and departure times are considered on time if they are within 15 minutes of the scheduled time.
