Vietnamese billionaire sentenced to death by lethal injection in one of world’s biggest bank fraud cases British Broadcasting Corporation the report said.

Vietnamese property developer Truong My Lan, 67, was sentenced to death on Thursday for plundering $44bn (£35bn) from one of Vietnam’s largest banks, Saigon Commercial Bank, over 11 years .

According to Vietnamese law, no individual is allowed to hold more than 5% of the shares of any bank. But prosecutors said Lan owned more than 90% of Saigon Business through hundreds of shell companies and people acting as her agents.

She is accused of using her power to appoint her own people to high positions and then have them make hundreds of loans to shell companies she owned. Her loans account for 93% of the bank’s total loans.

She was also accused of bribing those in power.

The high-profile case involved 2,700 testifiers, 10 state prosecutors and about 200 attorneys.

Along with Lan, 85 other people were also charged, four of whom were sentenced to life in prison, while the others must serve time.
