A child is expected to make a full recovery after being pulled from beneath an overturned vehicle during a crash, authorities said Friday after releasing dramatic video showing a rescue effort on a busy highway.
Officers arrived at the scene Thursday morning after receiving reports that the child and mother had been thrown out of the car.
Body camera footage shared on social media Friday by Fort Worth Police The department shows an officer running toward the overturned car and beginning to search for the child as a distraught woman can be heard in the background screaming for her child.
The officer rallied other motorists who had stopped at the scene to help lift the car.
“Here, we need to move the car,” the officer told them, adding that he believed the child was pinned underneath.
“Keep going, keep going,” the officer urges them as the car is lifted high enough to grab the child’s leg and pull him to safety.
The child was unresponsive, but an officer said he felt a pulse. As they tried to get the child to breathe, one officer applied pressure to the child’s chest using his fingers. Eventually the child started making noise and then started crying.
Police said both mother and child are expected to make a full recovery.
“While this video may be extremely difficult to watch, it is an important example of the types of situations our police officers may face while performing their duties,” the department said in its post.
Police Chief Eddie Garcia called the child a “little angel” in a social media post and praised the officers for their heroism. The department also thanked citizens who stopped to help with the rescue.
