Audio recording details tense moments aboard a US Boeing jet that was forced to make an emergency landing on Sunday After the engine cover came off during takeoff.
In recorded air traffic control audio, a pilot said, “Several passengers and flight attendants heard a sound hitting the wing.”
Video shared widely on social media showed the engine cover peeling off, getting stuck on the plane’s wing and flapping in the wind.
“Let’s declare an emergency on Southwest Airlines 3695 and we want to return immediately,” an air traffic control official can be heard saying on the recording. “Apparently a piece of our engine cowl is hanging off.”
The Boeing 737-800 carried more than 130 passengers to Houston and returned safely to Denver International Airport about 10 minutes after takeoff. The aircraft was then towed to the gate for inspection by a Southwest maintenance team.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said in a statement: “Southwest Airlines Flight 3695 returned safely to Denver International Airport…the pilot reported that the engine hood came off during takeoff and struck the flaps.”
The FAA has also launched an investigation into the incident.
This follows other recent incidents involving Boeing aircraft that have raised safety concerns.
