After news of Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani (BITS) seeking help from its alumni network for the placement process made headlines, its group vice-chancellor V Ramgopal Rao has said that it is being “blown out of proportion”. Is”.

The report said some institutes, including IITs and IIMs, are struggling to put their students through the campus placement process amid the current industry slowdown and are reaching out to their alumni networks for help.

“It should be a very common practice for institutes like BITS and IITs to reach out to alumni for placements. I did the same in my previous role as Director of IIT Delhi to improve placement opportunities for students. It is also necessary.” The former director of IIT Delhi posted on X.

The statement came as a clarification on “BITS Pilani Deans to our alumni seeking help for placements”.

BITS Pilani’s Arya Kumar, the current dean of alumni relations, has sent a notice to its alumni network for the second placement season, reports Indian Express.

“You are well aware of the current industry downturn and its impact on businesses and potential hires. The global economy has not experienced such a recession for decades. The technology sector has been fundamentally impacted, with nearly 4 lakh workers laid off globally since January 2022. This uncertainty is having a cascading effect with the funding winter setting in, resulting in cost-cutting in small and large businesses alike, impacting hiring. All levels including campus level. Despite business headwinds, BITS Pilani stands in a strong position, with our closing placement figures for the academic year 2022-23 standing at 89.2% for Indian campuses. Though the placement teams are doing their best, they would greatly appreciate the support of our esteemed alumni to help them tide over the current crisis,” the notice reads.

V Ramgopal Rao said that more than 7400 alumni of BITS Pilani are working as CEOs and other senior positions in corporates across the world. “This mail from our Dean received a very positive response from alumni and many joined us. He said the average salary for a batch size of about 3400 at BITS campuses is more than Rs 20 lakh, which is unprecedented.

Mr Rao also said that if an institute is not using its prestigious alumni network for placements, “they are doing something wrong”.

Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani is one of the first six institutes in India to be awarded the Institute of Eminence status. It focuses primarily on higher education and research in engineering and science.
