To further upgrade it and improve operations at the Savarkar International Airport, the authority is preparing to install an advanced Runway Lighting System (RLS) and Instrument Landing System (ILS). This will help aircraft operate safely at night and make safe landings on runways during bad weather conditions.

The news has been confirmed by Airport Director Devendra Yadav. Speaking to PTI, he said the Doppler Very High-Frequency Omni Range (DVOR), a short or medium range radio navigation system, has been operational since January 19. This will help the planes to determine their direction and position. Using VHF signal.

PTI also quoted the airport director as saying, “For implementation of the Instrumental Landing System (ILS), installation, calibration and process design work of glide path and distance measuring equipment (DME) has already been completed and It will be operational soon.” ,

Furthermore, he also said, “This will help in more flight operations with competitive airfares and contribute to greater tourist flow to this beautiful island.” The airport director said this will also reduce diversion of flights due to bad weather conditions.

AAI is in close touch with the Navy

It is reported that the Airports Authority of India (AAI) is in close coordination with the Navy, and plans to finish the ILS system by February 15, while the RLS is expected to be completed by the end of March.
