US destroys Houthi missiles, drones in new attack in Yemen

The U.S. military said it destroyed seven missiles and three drones on Monday in areas controlled by Houthi rebels in Yemen that posed a threat to commercial ships and U.S. Navy ships.

The Iran-backed Houthis have been attacking ships in the Red Sea since November in what they say is an act of solidarity with the Palestinians during Israel’s war against Hamas militants in Gaza.

U.S. Central Command said in a statement released on “action. Twitter.

U.S. Central Command said: “It has been determined that these weapons pose an imminent threat to commercial vessels and U.S. Navy vessels in the area. These actions are being taken to protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safer for U.S. Navy and commercial vessels.”

The Houthi attacks have caused a sharp rise in insurance costs for ships plying the main Red Sea trade route and prompted many shipping lines to switch to longer routes around the southern tip of Africa.

The United States and Britain have responded with repeated attacks on Houthi rebel targets in Yemen, but attacks on ships the rebels say are linked to Israel have not been stopped.
