Srinagar: There was uproar in the Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) Assembly on Tuesday when MLAs from the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the ruling National Conference (NC) accused each other of regional discrimination.

Noise broke out in the House after BJP MLA Shakti Parihar accused the Jammu and Kashmir Education Department of discriminating against the Jammu region.

After these allegations, there was a heated argument between the members of BJP and National Conference. Education Minister Sakina Itu strongly denied the allegations, calling them baseless and politically motivated.

As tempers flared, members from both sides started arguing loudly, forcing the Speaker to intervene to restore order in the House. Later the matter was postponed.

Education Minister Itu told the BJP MLAs that there is only one government in Jammu and Kashmir and there is no question of discrimination between the two regions.

Then People’s Democratic Party (PDP) MLA, Waheed Ur Rehman Parra introduced a bill for regularization of ‘Kacharia (pasture land)’ and state lands and to allot ownership rights to the occupants of these lands.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah asked the PDP MLA how the House could allot illegal lands to encroachers. Waheed Para, in turn, asked junior Abdullah to “not be afraid of the BJP” as he alleged that the party had termed land allotment to encroachers in the valley as ‘land jihad’.

CM Omar Abdullah asked NC MLA Mir Saifullah to withdraw a bill introduced by him on casual laborers and daily wage earners as the matter is already under review by a committee headed by the Chief Secretary. CM Omar Abdullah said, “We want to resolve this, but need accurate data before moving forward.”

Congress MLA, Nizam-ud-din Bhat’s bill on the Protection of Human Rights Bill was also rejected in the House as CM Omar Abdullah said that after 2019, Jammu and Kashmir comes under the National Human Rights Commission, and the bill can be reconsidered only after statehood is restored.
