Peter II of Yugoslavia, also known as Peter II Karađorđević, was the last king of Yugoslavia, reigning from October 1934 until he was deposed in November 1945. He was the last reigning member of the Karađorđević dynasty. Peter acceded to the Yugoslav throne in 1934 at the age of 11 after his father, King Alexander I, was assassinated.

A regency was set up under his cousin Prince Paul. After Paul declared Yugoslavia’s accession to the Tripartite Pact in late March 1941, a pro-British coup d’état deposed the regent and declared Peter of age. In response, the Axis powers invaded and partitioned Yugoslavia. Peter fled the country and lived in exile in London and then the United States. He never abdicated and continued to be recognized as the head of state by the Royal Yugoslav Government in Exile and various other monarchists. Peter II of Yugoslavia was born on September 6, 1923, in Belgrade, Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (now in Serbia). He was the firstborn son of King Alexander I and Queen Maria. His education began at The Royal Palace Belgrade, after which he went to Sandroyd School, which he left after his father’s assassination in 1934.
Since Peter II was 11 years old and underage at the time of his father’s assassination, a regency was formed consisting of three regents, including his father’s cousin Prince Paul. In 1941, at the beginning of the Second World War, the Kingdom of Yugoslavia found itself surrounded by countries that had joined the Axis as allies of Prince Paul’s decision to sign a non-aggression pact with Nazi Germany resulted in severe consequences. As a result of the coup, King Peter II was proclaimed of age.
The Yugoslav Army was unprepared to resist the ensuing invasion by Nazi Germany, and Yugoslavia was partitioned. Peter II was forced to leave the country along with the Yugoslav Government, initially to Palestine and then to Egypt. King Peter II joined other monarchs and leaders of German-occupied Europe in London in June 1941. Peter II died in Denver, Colorado, in 1970.

Peter II of Yugoslavia died on November 3, 1970, in Denver Hospital, Colorado, after a long and grave illness. He was suffering from cirrhosis of the liver, which was caused by his depression and alcoholism later in his life.
