UN Libya envoy resigns

United Nations special envoy for Libya Abdoulaye Batili resigned.

Bartilli held the position for 18 months. He submitted his resignation on Tuesday.

He said that although the United Nations mission in the North African country under his leadership had “made many efforts”, the efforts of Libyan leaders “lacked political will and sincerity”.

Batili said there was no room for the international coalition to “operate successfully” in Libya.

Libya has been in turmoil since the 2011 overthrow of longtime dictator Muammar Gaddafi. The country is currently rife with armed groups fighting for territory.

Lying on the Mediterranean Sea, Libya has become a major route for African migrants and people smugglers.

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres accepted Batili’s resignation. U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Guterres said he was grateful for Batili’s “tireless efforts to restore peace and stability in Libya.”
