Ukrainian double European champion weightlifter Oleksandr Pylyshenko has died in action against Russia, the Ukrainian Weightlifting Federation announced on Monday. Pylyushenko, 30, won European gold in 2016 and 2017, and narrowly missed a medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, where he came fourth in the 85kg category.
“It is with great sadness that we have to inform you that the heart of the great Ukrainian player Oleksandr Pylyshenko has stopped beating,” the federation said in a statement.
Ukraine’s national weightlifting coach Viktor Slobodniuk said in a post on Facebook that Pylyshenko “died as a hero defending Ukraine”.
The Ukrainian Olympic Committee said Pylyushenko joined the Ukrainian army at the start of the Russian invasion in February 2022.
