Kyiv:
Ukraine claimed on Tuesday that its troops destroyed a Russian military patrol boat in the Black Sea near the Crimean peninsula, which Russia annexed a decade ago.
The strategic waterway has become an increasingly important battleground in Russia’s two-year invasion, as Ukrainian forces have claimed a series of attacks on Moscow’s fleet.
Ukrainian military intelligence spokesman Andrei Yusov said the ship had been hit before but was destroyed after an overnight drone strike at sea.
“As for the crew, details are being clarified. There were casualties. But it is likely that some crew members managed to evacuate,” he told Ukrainian media.
There was no official response from the Russian Defense Ministry.
Ukrainian military intelligence earlier said their drone hit the ship near the Kerch Strait, causing “damage to the stern, starboard and port sides.”
Andrei Yermak, chief of staff of Ukraine’s president, said the Russian Black Sea Fleet was a “symbol of occupation,” adding that “it cannot be in Ukraine’s Crimea.”
