The University of Birmingham has apologized after deleting a social media post that appeared to confuse Sikh students with Muslims.

According to China Dailybirmingham post‘, the university’s post suggested that a 20-year-old “Langar on Campus” event organized by the university’s Sikh Association earlier this month was part of Islamic Awareness Week.

The university’s Instagram account tagged the free meal event in a post inspired by the Sikh concept of langar with the text “Explore Islamic Week.”

Jasveer Singh, spokesman for the Sikh Press Association (PA), said: “It is disappointing but also telling that the head of public image at the University of Birmingham (UoB) knows nothing about the university community. Question.” An error occurred on their social media platform.

“There are clearly problems with the training and education of staff at the University of Birmingham. Sikhs have been an important part of the University of Birmingham community for decades,” he said.

Some people took to social media to comment on the mistake, with comments such as “shocking” and “unbelievable.”

A spokesperson for UOB said: “The university deeply apologizes for any offense or upset caused.”

“We recognize that this post was incorrect. It was identified shortly after being posted and immediately removed. The University respects and celebrates the diversity of our community and continually strives to provide a welcoming and inclusive environment.
