London:

A government spokesman confirmed on Thursday that an RAF plane carrying the British defense minister experienced signal interference while flying near Russian territory this week.

The electronic attack occurred on Wednesday night as Grant Shapps was flying back from Poland on an RAF jet, where he had watched a NATO exercise, The Times reported.

A British government spokesman said the plane “temporarily encountered GPS interference while approaching Kaliningrad” in the Baltic Sea, about 1,200 kilometers (about 750 miles) west of Moscow.

The spokesperson added: “This did not threaten the safety of the aircraft and it is not unusual for aircraft to experience GPS interference near Kaliningrad, which is of course Russian territory.”

The Times, which had reporters on the plane, said the GPS signal was disrupted for about 30 minutes.

The Daily Mail added that phones could no longer connect to the internet and the plane was forced to use alternative methods to determine its location.

Shapps earlier watched hundreds of soldiers take part in Exercise Resolute Defender, the largest exercise by a US-led military coalition since the Cold War.

Britain has been one of Ukraine’s strongest supporters in its two-year struggle against Russia’s full-scale invasion of its neighbor in February 2022.

London has pledged more than 7 billion pounds ($8.9 billion) in military support to Ukraine and trained tens of thousands of Ukrainian troops.
