UK Labor Party uses Holi to reach out to British Indians

Britain’s opposition Labor Party has used Holi to connect with the Indian diaspora ahead of the country’s general election.

According to Reuters, the last possible date for a general election under the law is January 28, 2025, although Chancellor Rishi Sunak told reporters in December that 2024 would be an election year.

The Labor Party, led by leader Keir Starmer, attended the event in London organized by the Anglo-Indian think tank the 1928 Institute, along with London Mayor Sadiq Khan and members of the shadow cabinet.

Starmer stressed the importance of Holi’s message of new beginnings, especially in an election year.

“As we welcome the coming spring, it is a time to celebrate new beginnings; to bid farewell to the old and welcome in the new,” he said, according to the Press Trust of India.

Opposition leader Starmer said the occasion provided an ideal opportunity for the party to emphasize its message of “national renewal” as the country prepares for a general election expected later this year.

He recognized the valuable contribution of the Hindu community, “Now is the time for us to thank Hindus across the country for their rich contributions to our national life and to recognize the power of our shared values and commitment to each other.”

Labour’s health and social care spokesman Wes Streeting praised the role of the Anglo-Indian community in healthcare and cited their significant contribution to the National Health Service (NHS).

Nikita Ved from the 1928 Institute in London highlights the healthcare challenges faced by British Indians, with more than half experiencing barriers to physical healthcare and 76% experiencing barriers to mental healthcare .
