Mumbai, Nov 24 (IANS) Shiv Sena-UBT chief Uddhav Thackeray and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena president Raj Thackeray, in a joint letter, have appealed to Maharashtra State Election Commissioner Dinesh Waghmare to take immediate steps to remove serious irregularities and confusion in the voter list published for the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections.
He has also demanded that the State Election Commission should give 21 days time for suggestions and objections or cancel the elections and conduct the elections only after correcting the voter list.
The two leaders said recent voter lists show worrying discrepancies and frequent changes, which threaten to undermine the transparency and integrity of the election process.
In their joint letter, they noted that the final revised voter list for the BMC elections on October 30, 2025, was not published quickly or clearly, leaving voters and political parties without important information.
He questioned the delay in updating the women supplementary voter list and asked why the State Election Commission had failed to clarify important procedural matters.
Shiv Sena-UBT leader and former minister Aaditya Thackeray told reporters that often without clear notification or following established norms, confusion has arisen with new names being added and old names being removed or changed.
He expressed concern about the presence of duplicate voters and alleged that more than 900,000 duplicate entries have been identified in the electoral rolls.
He also cited the joint letter by Thackeray’s cousins on how these discrepancies will be corrected before the elections, demanding strict scrutiny of the processes used to update and verify voters’ names.
Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray have also criticized the State Election Commission for failing to set up clear mechanisms and technical protocols for voter registration in Mumbai, leading to confusion and potential disenfranchisement.
“Is there no technical knowledge left, or is it a case of ‘less intelligence, more confusion’?”, he asked officials to ensure that genuine voters are protected and all irregularities are swiftly addressed.
Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray also urged the State Election Commission to stop further updates of the voter list until the issues are resolved and to inform the public about the steps being taken to guarantee transparent elections.
He warned that unless action was taken, Mumbai’s democratic reputation would suffer, and challenged authorities to demonstrate their ability to protect citizens’ electoral rights.
Calling for accountability, the Thackeray duo has urged the State Election Commission to restore order and confidence in the election system.
