Two law enforcement officers were killed in Syracuse, New York. — Syracuse/File

Two law enforcement officers were shot to death in Syracuse, New York, on Sunday night. Syracuse reported.

A third person was reportedly shot, but no further information has been provided.

Between 8 pm and 9 pm local time, two fatal shootings occurred in a residential area in Salina, a suburb of Syracuse.

The suspect opened fire on a Syracuse Police Department officer and a deputy with the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office.

Onondaga Police Chief Toby Shirley said at a news conference that the suspect is in custody and further investigation is ongoing.

Some local reports said the suspect had also been killed.

According to Shirley, police were investigating a car theft and eventually found a house in Salina where the incident occurred. When they arrived at the house, the suspect opened fire on them.

He said the area was safe and there was no threat to nearby residents.

According to local witnesses, at least 20 shots were fired.

Mousa Alzokari, who lives across the street from the house where the shooting occurred, said he saw an officer being loaded into a deputy’s car and driven away. He also saw at least one person being handcuffed.
