Chandigarh, Oct 25 (IANS) The Special Operation Cell of Punjab Police, Amritsar has arrested a member of a terror network and recovered two Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), weighing about 2.5 kg, filled with high-grade RDX and equipped with a timer for detonation. Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said here on Saturday.
The accused has been identified as Manpreet Singh alias Tiddi, resident of Kotla Tarkhana village, Amritsar. He has a criminal history, he was earlier involved in two criminal cases registered at police stations of Batala and Kalanaur. After spending about one and a half years in Gurdaspur and Amritsar jails, he was released in February 2025 and later resumed his criminal activities.
DGP Yadav said preliminary investigation revealed that the accused was acting on the instructions of his handlers based in Armenia, Britain and Germany, who were receiving instructions from the Pakistan-based mastermind of the banned terrorist organisation.
Sharing operational details, Assistant Inspector General (Amritsar) Sukhminder Singh Mann said that acting swiftly on a specific intelligence input, the police arrested suspect Manpreet Singh and recovered a .30 bore pistol along with ammunition from his possession. He said, following their revelations, two IEDs packed in metal containers with high-grade RDX and equipped with a timer for detonation have also been recovered from the area of Kotla Tarkhana village.
The AIG said investigation indicated that about two weeks ago, a Pakistan-based handler had facilitated the drone drop of the seized consignment in Ajnala sector, which was retrieved by the arrested person and further hidden near a canal near his Kotla Tarkhana village.
Their handlers, he said, had instructed them to remain on standby and wait for further orders to hand over the IED to another contact for the intended use.
