Beirut:

An Israeli attack on a truck in Syria near the Lebanese border at dawn on Sunday killed two Hezbollah members, a war observer said.

“Israel hit a civilian truck with a missile near the Syrian-Lebanese border,” the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said in a report.

The UK-based Observer group, which relied on a network of sources in Syria, said the attack resulted in “the deaths of at least two Hezbollah members”.

Hezbollah later announced in a separate statement that two of its fighters “were martyred on the way to Jerusalem,” a phrase used to refer to members killed by Israeli fire.

A source close to Hezbollah confirmed that two people were killed in Syria this morning.

Syrian state media did not report the attack.

Israel has launched hundreds of airstrikes in Syria since the country’s civil war erupted in 2011 due to an uprising against the government of President Bashar al-Assad, mostly targeting pro-Iranian forces, including Hezbollah and the Syrian army.

Attacks have multiplied amid the ongoing war in Gaza between Israel and the Palestinian Hamas group.

An Israeli attack on a Damascus residential neighborhood on Wednesday killed three Iranian-backed militants, including a Syrian and two foreigners, according to the Observer group.

On February 10, Observatory reported that an Israeli attack on a building west of Damascus killed three pro-Iranian militiamen.

Since the war in Gaza broke out on October 7, Hezbollah has announced that 16 members have been killed in Israeli attacks in Syria.

The Israeli military announced on February 3 that it “attacked more than 50 such Hezbollah targets across Syria from the ground and the air.”

Israel rarely comments on individual attacks but has repeatedly said it will not allow Iran to expand its presence in Syria.
