Trump wins Missouri Republican primary; Haley still seeking victory

Donald Trump won Missouri’s Republican caucuses, one of three events Saturday that will award delegates for the 2024 U.S. Republican presidential nomination.

The former US president, who is particularly strong in the caucuses, used the victory to extend his lead among delegates and advance into the party’s convention in Michigan. Idaho was scheduled to hold its caucuses later Saturday. His last major rival, former United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley, is still seeking her first victory of the election season.

There are no Democratic races on Saturday.

The next event on the Republican calendar is Sunday in the District of Columbia. Two days later comes Super Tuesday, when 16 states and American Samoa will hold primaries in what will be the largest voting day of the year outside of the November election. Trump is expected to seal the nomination in a matter of days.

Michigan

Michigan Republicans began allocating 39 of the state’s 55 Republican presidential delegates at their convention in Grand Rapids. Trump won 33 seats, with six seats yet to be allocated.

But a large segment of the party’s grassroots was absent from the rally due to the lingering fallout from the months-long battle over the party’s leadership.

Last Tuesday, Trump easily won the Michigan primary with 68% of the vote to Haley’s 27%.

Democrats who control state government violated national Republican rules by including Michigan as an early primary state, and Michigan Republicans were forced to split the delegate allocation in half.

“I don’t know what my role is here other than to be in the corner for Trump,” Columbia resident Carmen Christal said, adding that she was “just looking forward to this experience.” .

This year marks the first test of the new system, which is run almost entirely by volunteers from the Republican side.

The caucuses were organized after Republican Gov. Mike Parson signed a 2022 law that, among other things, canceled the presidential primary scheduled for March 12.

Lawmakers have failed to reinstate the primary despite calls from both state Republican and Democratic leaders. The Democratic Party will hold its party primary on March 23.

Trump won twice under Missouri’s old presidential primary system.

Last year, Idaho lawmakers passed cost-cutting legislation aimed at moving all primaries in the state to the same date in May. But the bill inadvertently eliminated the presidential primary entirely.

The Republican-led Legislature considered convening a special session to resume presidential primaries, but was unable to reach an agreement on the proposal in time, leaving both parties with presidential primaries as the only option.

The Democratic caucus won’t be held until May 23.

Idaho’s last Republican caucuses were in 2012, when about 40,000 of the state’s nearly 200,000 registered Republican voters showed up to choose their preferred candidate.

This year, all Republican voters who want to participate must show up in person. They will vote after hearing a short speech from the candidate or his or her representative.

If a candidate receives more than 50% of the statewide vote, that candidate wins all of Idaho’s delegates. If no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote, each candidate receiving at least 15% of the total vote will receive a corresponding number of delegates.
