Donald Trump said he will outline his long-awaited abortion policy on Monday, which he believes will be a compromise position that threatens to anger both sides of the debate.

The Republican presidential candidate posted on Trump’s social media platform “Truth Social” that his policy would include exceptions for rape and incest and protect the life of the mother. While Trump did not provide more details, it appears he may seek a less restrictive federal ban than the six-week bans passed by states such as Florida and Georgia.

As in the past, Trump believes Republicans must take a more moderate stance on abortion if they are to win the presidential and congressional elections in November.

“We must use common sense to recognize that we have an obligation to save our country, which is currently in severe decline, and win elections, or we will end up with nothing but defeat, death and destruction,” Trump wrote.

Regulation of abortion has been a matter for individual states since the U.S. Supreme Court struck down constitutional protections for the procedure in a 2022 ruling. Since winning the Republican nomination, Trump has faced pressure from anti-abortion groups and others to detail his stance.

Proposals that are less restrictive than the six-week ban are likely to displease anti-abortion advocates and spur abortion rights groups, who have warned they will seek a federal ban if Republicans take control of the White House and Congress.

Democratic President Joe Biden has made Trump’s opposition to abortion rights a key tenet of his reelection campaign.
