“One thing is crystal clear: Ghosh has zero respect for Bengali women, be they revered Hindu goddesses or India’s only female chief minister,” it added.

The party was referring to the huge controversy in 2021 caused by Mr Ghosh’s remarks about Goddess Durga. “Lord Ram is an emperor. Some people believe that he is an avatar (incarnation). We know the names of his ancestors. Do we know the same about Durga?” he said.

Trinamool leader Kunal Ghosh said in a video message that such derogatory remarks were only suitable for a BJP leader. “Your party has kicked you out of Medinipur. You cannot speak there, so you are venting your frustrations by abusing Mamata Banerjee. She is a seven-time MP, four-time Union minister and A three-time chief minister. She is popular across the country. She is India’s daughter,” he said, adding, “Your party is saying ‘Ja Dilip Ja’.

The BJP MP, who won the Medinipur Lok Sabha seat in 2019, will contest from Bardhaman Durgapur this time.

Trinamool spokesperson and Bengal Minister Shashi Panja said the BJP’s “real character” is to disrespect women and Bengali women will respond to it.

Former cricketer Kirti Azad, Trinamool’s candidate in Bardhaman Durgapur against Mr Ghosh, said it was a “zamindari mentality”. “They never respect women, so they say whatever they want. He (Ghosh) has lost his mental balance. He should be hospitalized. Such people cannot stay in society,” he said.

Party leader Sushmita Dev referred to the row over derogatory remarks against actor Kangana Ranaut, the BJP’s Lok Sabha candidate. In a clarification, Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said the posts on her social media account were posted without her knowledge and she had deleted the “inappropriate posts”.

“The BJP is making an important speech (on the Kangana Ranau issue) but its leader’s remarks against the country’s only woman chief minister are against our political traditions. The BJP is frustrated with its defeat in Bengal. I think Ask the National Party Women Commission Chairperson that you are so worried about the BJP candidates but you remained silent when the BJP insulted Mamata Banerjee. You should be ashamed,” she said.
