India’s film and entertainment industry is mourning the demise of veteran actor Satish Shah, known for his quirky performances in cult classic sitcoms. Sarabhai vs Sarabhai,
Shah died of kidney failure on Saturday while being treated at a hospital in the western Indian city of mumbaiHe was 74 years old.
Shah was one of the most celebrated Indian actors, renowned for his comic timing and versatility in film and television. The Gujarat-born actor became a household name for his performances in sitcoms like I am going to do it my friendsWhich was released in 1983 and Sarabhai vs Sarabhai in 2003.
In Sarabhai vs SarabhaiShah played Indravadan Sarabhai, one of the most iconic characters of Indian television, a witty, upper-class retired man who juggles his family’s chaos with extremely sharp sarcasm.
Shah studied at Xavier’s College mumbai and later joined the Film and Television Institute of India in the city of Pune before starting his acting career with Arvind Desai’s Ajeeb Dastan in 1978. Since then, Shah has acted in over 250 feature films.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi A post on X paid tribute to Shah. Mr Modi wrote, “Deeply saddened by the demise of Shri Satish Shah ji.”
The Prime Minister said, “He will be remembered as a true legend of Indian entertainment. His effortless humor and iconic performances brought laughter to the lives of countless people.”
Comedian Johnny Lever mourned the death of his “dearest friend of over 40 years”.

Actress Priyanka Chopra Jonas shared a story on her Instagram profile on Saturday and wrote: “Rest in peace Satishji.”

Farah Khan, director Main Hoon NaSaid, where Shah played the role of a professor, he wrote: “Rest in peace, dear Satish. It was a pleasure knowing you and working with you. Will miss sending you memes and jokes everyday.”
Actor R Madhavan, who co-starred with Shah in the 1997 sitcom Family membersShared a picture with him and actor Mandira Bedi.
“Heaven will be a happier and happier place now. Satish ji, we make the gods laugh out loud as they praise their creation. Thank you for being such a solid wind beneath my wings at the beginning of my career… for constantly believing in me and encouraging me,” he wrote.
Shah is survived by his wife Madhu Shah.
