Local media reported that the 69-year-old man fell about seven meters to the ground from the perimeter wall Pantheon In the city center, on Friday.
Newspaper Republic Said Emergency services and firefighters arrived at the scene after a priest saw him lying on the ground and alerted authorities.
The newspaper obtained images from the CCTV cameras of the Pantheon and the cosmetics shop where the incident took place.
It said they showed the man sitting alone on a parapet before losing his balance and falling into the corridor of the Pantheon.
Emergency services arrived and had to force open the gate before finding a man dead in a ditch.
An investigation is underway to determine the cause of death.
Rome has seen an increase in the number of tourist arrivals in recent years, especially since the 2020 coronavirus pandemic. More than 22 million people visited this iconic city last year.
The Pantheon is one of its main attractions. In 2019 it registered almost nine million visitors, making it the most visited Italian state museum site.
In 2023, tourists began being charged for admission to the site – which had previously been free to visit.
