Agartala, Oct 27 (IANS) Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Monday said tourism in the eight-state northeastern region has huge potential for generating employment and revenue.

Participating in the virtual meeting of the high-level task force on tourism convened by him, the Chief Minister also stressed the need to improve communication infrastructure, increase investment in the tourism sector and ensure tourist safety and hospitality as well as develop cultural and religious tourism in the northeastern states.

An official of the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) said that various aspects to promote tourism in the northeastern states were discussed in the meeting. The virtual meeting was chaired by Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, Minister of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER). Union Culture and Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, his Sikkim counterpart Prem Singh Tamang and chief ministers of several other northeastern states participated in the virtual meeting, the official said.

He said that during the meeting, a well-organized draft report on the development of tourism in the north-eastern states was presented by Meghalaya Chief Minister Sangma.

After the presentation, participating in the discussion, the Chief Minister of Tripura said that significant progress has been achieved in the tourism industry of Tripura. Highlighting various initiatives and achievements in the tourism sector, Saha said that the draft report has discussed in detail the potential areas and plan for development of tourism in the North Eastern region.

During the meeting, DoNER Minister Scindia said that a draft report on business development in the north-eastern states was earlier presented under the chairmanship of the Chief Minister of Tripura. He also highlighted that to promote tourism, states should plan not only for their own regions but also with a broader national and global perspective.

Union Culture and Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat in his address said that tourism plays an important role in strengthening the global and national economy.

He stressed that development of tourism is necessary to increase the visibility of the state on the global platform and generate employment opportunities.

Shekhawat urged the Chief Ministers of all North Eastern states to take active steps to promote tourist destinations in their respective states. Many senior officials from various states of the North-East were present in the virtual meeting.

The DoNER Ministry had constituted several high-level task forces to identify key interventions and formulate actionable short-term, medium-term and long-term strategies for integrated development of the North East Economic Corridor.

The high-level task forces were formed after the 72nd Plenary Session of the North-Eastern Council (NEC) held in Agartala in November last year. Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired the NEC plenary session.
