Although Washington state is not in the path of the upcoming total solar eclipse on April 8, the moon will still cover part of the sun from our perspective.
A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth, blocking some or all of the light reaching the Earth’s surface for a short period of time.
According to NASA, the center of the moon’s shadow on the Earth’s surface (the place where sunlight is completely blocked) can be relatively small, sometimes only 50 miles across.
As the moon, sun and Earth move, the center of the shadow will move across the Earth’s surface, creating what scientists call the path of totality.
For this eclipse, at least part of the event will reportedly be visible throughout North and Central America space.
