If you’re in Kentucky, your Easter celebrations may be affected by thunderstorms this weekend and early next week.

The National Weather Service is predicting showers and thunderstorms with lightning, hail and strong winds starting Sunday afternoon.

“Strong to severe storms are possible Monday night into Tuesday afternoon,” the National Weather Service said.

“Severe storms are most likely over southern Indiana Monday night, where damaging winds, large hail, rotating tornadoes and localized flooding are possible. Confidence in the location and timing of Tuesday’s severe storms is lower, but damaging winds, severe Hail and tornadoes are possible.”

Severe thunderstorms with possible large hail and lightning are possible north of Interstate 64 on Sunday and Monday, with a slight risk across the region on Tuesday. The weather outlook covers the south-central to northwest portions of the state, with eastern Kentucky also under focus.

WKYT chief meteorologist Chris Bailey said not everyone will experience rain throughout the day. He advised against canceling plans but encouraged having backup options.

“Not everyone is going to see rain. If you’re outside in the rain, it’s 75 degrees,” he said. “Just make a choice when the Easter Bunny jumps across your yard.”

“Don’t cancel anything at all,” Bailey said. “Just have a backup plan.”

The risk for severe weather is expected to be highest late Monday and into Tuesday, when people may see high winds, large hail and tornadoes, especially in southern Indiana. Temperatures are expected to drop significantly on Wednesday following the storm, with highs possibly in the 40s and lows in the 20s.
