Hyderabad, October 23 (IANS) Rachakonda police on Thursday arrested three accused in the attack on a cow protection team worker on the outskirts of Hyderabad.

Birla Prashant Kumar alias Sonu Singh, 28, was injured when a man involved in cattle transportation business opened fire on him near Yamnampet in Ghatkesar on the outskirts of Hyderabad on Wednesday evening.

The shooters, Mohammed Ibrahim Qureshi, 24, Kuruva Srinivas, 29, and Hasanbin Mosin, 22, were arrested in Shamshabad early Thursday. Another accused Mohammad Hanif Qureshi, 34, is absconding.

While Ibrahim and Mosin are in the cattle transportation business, Srinivas is a farmer.

Rachakonda Police Commissioner G. Sudheer Babu told media persons that they arrested the accused within 12 hours.

Police have seized a country-made pistol, a car and three cellphones from the accused. Two cartridges (5 mm diameter) were recovered from the crime scene. A bullet taken from the body of an injured person was also recovered in a hospital.

A case has been registered at Pocharam IT Corridor Police Station under sections 109, 61(2) r/w 3(5) BNS and section 25(1)(A), 27 of the Arms Act.

Prashant told the police that he was called to that place by his friend Srinivas. Prashant said he met Srinivas along with Ibrahim, Hanif Qureshi and Hassan bin Mosin.

The accused confronted him for “exposing” their illegal cattle transportation, and in the ensuing argument, Ibrahim took out a gun from his car and shot Prashant in the right side of his chest before fleeing.

The investigation revealed that the motive was dual vendetta against the victim, who had caused him an estimated loss of Rs 1 crore by stopping Ibrahim’s cattle-transport vehicles, and a potential conflict arising from the alleged demand of Rs 5 lakh by the victim to stop his activities.

The Commissioner of Police said that the prompt action of the police in taking the injured/victim to the hospital by the patrol mobile and Blue Colt officers helped the injured person save his life, also the formation of special teams in coordination with all the wings led to the arrest of the accused within a short time.

Due to Prashant’s intervention, the first five cases were registered against the accused, due to which the vehicles were seized.

Cases were registered at various police stations under the Telangana State Prohibition of Cow Slaughter and Animal Protection Act and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

A case of extortion was also registered against Ibrahim at Kamatipura police station in 2022.

Meanwhile, BJP leaders led by the party’s state unit president were detained by the police after they protested outside the office of the Director General of Police. BJP demonstrated against the firing on Gau Rakshak Dal workers.

The police chased away the BJP leaders and workers in vehicles.
