A woman was allegedly beaten to death by her husband and his family in Greater Noida after failing to meet their dowry demands, which included a Toyota Fortuner and Rs 21 lakh in cash, police said.
Karishma’s brother Deepak, in his complaint to the police, said she called her family on Friday and told them that her husband Vikas, along with his parents and siblings, had assaulted her. When they arrived at the house to check on her, they found her dead.
Karishma got married to Vikas in December 2022 and the couple lives with Vikas’ family in Kheda Chauganpur Village, Ecotech-3, Greater Noida. According to Deepak, her family presented gold worth Rs 11 lakh and an SUV to the groom’s family during the wedding. However, Vikas’ family continued to demand more dowry and subjected her to physical and mental abuse over the years.
He said the abuse worsened after she gave birth to a girl and the two families tried to resolve their differences through several panchayat meetings in Vikas village. Deepak alleged that Karishma’s family then paid another Rs 10 lakh to his family, but the abuse did not stop.
Vikas’ family recently made a new demand for a Fortuner car and Rs 21 lakh from Karishma.
A dowry murder case was registered against Vikas, his father Sopal Bharti, mother Rakesh, sister Linki and brothers Sunil and Anil.
Vikas and his father have been arrested and police are looking for other accused in the case.
