The IMD said in its weather bulletin that the weather system is expected to significantly affect the western Himalayan region and surrounding plains in the coming days.
Widespread rain in Himalayan states
According to IMD, fairly widespread rainfall and snowfall is likely over Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand between January 27 and 28.
Scattered heavy rainfall or snowfall is also likely over these areas today along with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph.
The weather agency has also warned of isolated hailstorm in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand today.
Plains of northwest India on alert
The IMD said the impact of the western disturbance will also extend to the plains around the northwest.
Scattered light to moderate rain with thunder, lightning and strong winds is expected in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh today.
There is a possibility of thunderstorm and strong winds in Western Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan on January 27, while similar conditions may be seen in Eastern Uttar Pradesh on January 28. The IMD said light rain has also been predicted over parts of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh during this period.
Fog, cold wave and temperature outlook
Dense fog conditions are likely to persist in different parts of Uttarakhand till January 27, while Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Bihar may see fog on different days between January 28 and 31.
Cold wave is likely to hit parts of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh in late January.
The IMD said the minimum temperature over northwest India is expected to rise by 3-5 degrees Celsius in the next two days, followed by a gradual decline and then rise.
Delhi NCR weather forecast
For Delhi and National Capital Region (NCR), the IMD has predicted generally cloudy sky with thunderstorm and gusty winds with one or two light spells of rain on January 27.
There is a possibility of light to moderate fog in the morning on 28 and 29 January. The maximum temperature is expected to remain between 17-20 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature may remain above normal.
