Varanasi:

Six more products from Uttar Pradesh have been awarded Geographical Indication (GI) tags.

These include Kashgar’s famous ‘Tirangi Barfi’, a three-coloured sweet that was sold by freedom fighters during the Quit India Movement to prove a point.

The Geographical Indications Registry on Tuesday issued certification to Banaras Tirangi Barfi and five other Uttar Pradesh products.

With these six new products, Uttar Pradesh maintains its status as the state with the most GI labeled products in India, taking the total to 75.

Tamil Nadu followed suit with 58 GI products.

Other products certified in Uttar Pradesh include Banaras Metal Casting Craft, Lakhimpur Kheri Tharu Embroidery, Bareilly Cane and Bamboo Craft, Bareilly Zardozi Craft and Pilkhuwa Hand Block Print Textile.

“Two famous products of Varanasi, Tirangi Barfi and Metal Casting Craft, received GI certification on Tuesday,” said Padma Shri Rajnikant, GI expert.

He is the general secretary of the Human Welfare Society and played a vital role in obtaining geographical indication tags for 148 producers in 14 states and Union Territories, including Northeast, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

Rajnikant said, “These six GI tags are supported by the Lucknow Uttar Pradesh office of National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD). This achievement solidifies UP’s position as a leading country for GI products.”

In 2008-09, the state had only one GI product, ‘Allahabad Surkha Amrood’.
