Fears of a major conflict between Iran and Israel have never been greater.

After Israel’s brutal bombing and invasion of Gaza, the war between Israel and Tehran’s Lebanese proxy Hezbollah did not break out as immediately as Hamas had hoped.

But despite this, Iran is still trying to exploit Israel’s brutal invasion of Gaza in its ongoing strategic battle with the Jewish state.

Now, Israel’s clumsy attack on the Iranian consulate building in the Syrian capital Damascus appears to have increased the threat of direct conflict between Tehran and Tel Aviv.

The Israeli strike killed Mohammad Reza Zahedi, the top Iranian Quds Force general in charge of Iran’s military operations in Lebanon and Syria. He was the most senior IRGC officer killed since his assassination in the United States Qasem Soleimani In 2020, other Iranian military officers were also killed in buildings near the Iranian Embassy.

Many viewed targeting the Iranian general so blatantly at the consulate as a strange and clumsy move on Israel’s part – although AFP Reports said Zahedi was a member of Hezbollah’s Shura Council, the group’s decision-making body, hinting at a strategic motive for the assassination.

Israel’s killing of descendants of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Gaza this week has also heightened tensions and could lead to more violence, not less.

Haniyeh and his Islamist group have started a war that has reportedly claimed the lives of more than 30,000 people in Gaza. He doesn’t seem bothered by more deaths – even of close family members. “My son’s blood is a sacrifice on the road to the liberation of Palestine,” Haniyeh said expressionlessly in the safety of his air-conditioned office in Doha.

The liberation of Palestine remains a distant dream. But the prospect of war between Israel and Iran appears real, Iranian officials have said publicly threaten in retaliation for israel syria attack.

A major conflict between Israel and Iran is something Hamas desperately wants to happen. It cannot achieve its goal of destroying Israel on its own.

U.S. and Israeli officials have spent the past few days discussing how to prepare for an Iranian response, senior sources said Tell Axios.

Israeli officials said they were preparing for possible direct attacks on Israeli targets using ballistic missiles, drones and cruise missiles from Iranian territory and said Israel would respond in kind.

Most of the Netanyahu government’s statements about Iran need to be taken with a grain of salt.

But it occurred to some in Israel that, in Netanyahu’s view, talking about — or even having — a war between Iran and Israel might not be so bad. They cited provocative attacks in Damascus and the killing of Haniyeh’s family as evidence.

Israel’s center-left daily wrote an article saying, haaretzUri Misgav slammed the two Israeli attacks, saying, “These two obviously insane decisions have brought Israel to the brink of apocalypse as we know it… Designed to prevent any chance of a hostage agreement and ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. Its goal is to drag Israel into a war of total destruction to prolong the rule of Benjamin Netanyahu.”

Surely Netanyahu would be less cynical and reckless?

The Biden administration has absolutely no intention of going to war with Iran and Hezbollah. It knows that deterrence and diplomacy work best.

Gen. Michael “Eric” Kurila, commander of U.S. Central Command, arrived in Israel to show U.S. support. Two U.S. aircraft carriers are already in the eastern Mediterranean.

The past 48 hours have seen a flurry of diplomatic activity, with White House Middle East czar Brett McGurk calling the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Iraq, asking them to send a message to Iran urging a de-escalation of tensions with Israel.

Let’s hope Biden sends a similar message to Netanyahu. The President of the United States should start exerting his influence.

Without U.S. military support now, Israel will be vulnerable at any time.
